SoleidaeSoleidae(soles), a family of fishes of the order Pleuronectiformes. The body is elongated and leaf-shaped. The anterior edge of the head is rounded and overhangs the snout. The mouth is small and slanted. Soles are found in tropical and subtropical seas; some enter rivers. There are approximately 40 genera. Three species are found in the USSR. The common sole (Solea soled), which is found in the Black Sea, is up to 60 cm long and weighs up to 4 kg. It feeds on invertebrates and small fishes. The fish produces pelagic roe (about 150,000) in the spring and summer. Two species are found in the seas along the Southern Primor’e. Soles have some commercial value. A number of ichthyologists classify soles in a superfamily comprising two families: right-sided soles (Soleidae) and left-sided soles (Cynoglossidae). Soleidae
