Petr Redkin

Born Oct. 4 (16), 1808, in Romny, Poltava Province; died Mar. 7 (19), 1891, in St. Petersburg. Russian public figure, pedagogue, and jurist.

Redkin was a professor at Moscow University from 1835 to 1848 and at St. Petersburg University from 1863 to 1878. He taught history of philosophy and law. He served as rector of St. Petersburg University from 1873 to 1876. In the 1840’s, Redkin played a prominent role among the Westernizers, and he was one of the most consistent of the Hegelians. From 1841 he published the collection Juridical Notes (vols. 1–4, 1841–60) and the journal Novaia biblioteka dlia vospitaniia (New Library for Education; 1847–49). His principal work (not published in full) was From Lectures on the History of the Philosophy of Law in Connection With the History of Philosophy in General (vols. 1–7, 1889–91).
