Mutafchiev, Petr Stoianov

 

Born July 4, 1883, in Bozhentsi, Gabrovo District; died May 2, 1943, in Sofia. Bulgarian medievalist. Academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1937).

Mutafchiev was educated at the University of Sofia, where he became a professor in 1923. His principal works were devoted to the social and political history of Bulgaria, as well as to its international relations during the early Middle Ages. Mutafchiev also wrote on the study of historical sources and on archaeology. After the fascist coup d’etat of June 9, 1923, Mutafchiev’s social and scholarly views were marked by extreme nationalism.
