Salgir

a river in Crimean Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. The Salgir empties into Sivash Bay. It is 204 km long and drains an area of 3,750 sq km. It originates from two sources, the Angara and Kizil-Koba rivers, on the slopes of the Chatyr-Dag, where it flows in a narrow gorge. Further it flows through a wide valley of the Crimean steppe region. It is fed in various ways. There are freshets from December through May. In summer the water is very low; below Simferopol’ and to the influx of the Biiuk-Karasu, one of the right tributaries, the river dries up every year. The mean flow rate measured 36 km from the mouth is 2.27 cu m per sec. The Simferopol’ (Komsomol’skoe) Reservoir (area 3.2 sq km) is situated on the river. The Salgir is intersected by the Northern Crimean Canal. The river is used as a water-supply source and for irrigation.
