Intravenous saline load tests (fluid bolus) are used in cardiology to raise a person's blood pressure or the assess response to salty fluids in a patient with prerenal azotemia. In wound care, saline loading may be used to determine if a laceration has entered a nearby joint and therefore whether orthopedic surgery may be needed to repair the injury.
