Steed

(Russian kon’; Hemibarbus labeo), a fish of the family Cyprinidae. It measures 30–40 cm long (sometimes up to 60 cm) and weighs 0.6–1.2 kg (sometimes up to 3.3 kg). The “steed” is distributed in the fresh waters of Southeast Asia; in the USSR it is found in the basin of the Amur River. It dwells predominantly in rivers, but in the summer it migrates to lakes for its feeding and growing period. The steed feeds on aquatic invertebrates (primarily chironomids and mollusks) and small fish. Sexual maturity is reached in the fifth year. Spawning occurs in stages in June, with fertility reaching up to 100,000 eggs.
