Reidy, Affonso Eduardo

Born Oct. 26, 1909, in Paris; died Aug. 10, 1964, in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian architect.

Reidy graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro in 1930. He was one of the team of architects that designed the Ministry of Education and Public Health in Rio de Janeiro (1937–43), which was Brazil’s first major work of “new” architecture. Reidy’s work in Rio de Janeiro also included the Pedregulho Residential Neighborhood (1950–52) and the Museum of Modern Art (with R. Burle Marx, 1958). Reidy sought to completely integrate his structures with local climatic conditions. He strove for elegant composition marked by plasticity and for a synthesis of architecture with other forms of art.
