Shavteli, Ioane

Dates of birth and death unknown. Georgian poet and odist of the 12th and early 13th centuries.

Shavteli wrote the religious panegyric Praise to Our Lady of Vardzia. The odie narrative poem Abdul-Messiah, which is worldly in content but full of Christian religious motifs, is also attributed to Shavteli. Some scholars believe that Abdul-Messiah is modeled on a historical figure.
