Reindorf, Giunter

Born Jan. 14 (26), 1889, in St. Petersburg; died Mar. 14, 1974, in Tallinn. Soviet graphic artist. People’s Artist of the USSR (1969); corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1958).

From 1905 to 1913, Reindorf attended the Shtiglits School in St. Petersburg. From 1920 until his death, he worked in Estonia. Reindorf taught at the Tallinn School of Industrial Arts from 1920 to 1941 and at the Art Institute of the Estonian SSR from 1950 to 1958. He became a professor at the art institute in 1951.

Until 1941, Reindorf worked primarily with various techniques of engraving. He produced small prints and worked as a commercial graphic artist. He later devoted himself to drawing. His drawings of panoramic landscapes are marked by a calligraphic rendering of details. Reindorf sought to create a generalized representation of the Estonian landscape (for example, August Heat, pencil, 1955, Art Museum of the Estonian SSR, Tallinn). The artist also illustrated fairy tales by A. S. Pushkin (1946–47; State Prize of the Estonian SSR, 1949).

Reindorf was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and a medal.
