Antelava, Nikolai Vardenovich

 

Born Nov. 12 (24), 1893, in Zugdidi; died Apr. 26, 1970, in Tbilisi. Soviet surgeon. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR since 1963; Honored Worker in the Sciences of the Georgian SSR; member of the CPSU since 1946.

Antelava graduated from the department of medicine of the University of Rostov-on-Don in 1920. Between 1939 and 1941 he headed the department of surgery of the Dagestan Medical Institute. In 1941 he became head of the department of surgery of the Tbilisi Institute of Advanced Training for Physicians, serving simultaneously from 1949 to 1954 as chief surgeon for the Ministry of Health of the Georgian SSR. His main work was devoted to the surgical treatment of brucellosis and pulmonary tuberculosis. A recipient of the Lenin Prize (1961), Antelava was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals.
