Urukh

(in its upper course, Kharves), a river in the Northern Caucasus; a left tributary of the Terek River. The Urukh measures 104 km in length and drains an area of 1,280 sq km. It originates in the glaciers of the Glavnyi (Vodorazdel’nyi) Range of the Greater Caucasus. The river flows through ravines in its upper course and along a rolling plain in its lower course. It is fed mainly by glaciers and snow. The river has high water in the warm part of the year and low water in the winter. The mean flow rate 47 km from the mouth is 20.2 cu m per sec. The river is frozen over from December until March. It is used for floating timber and supplies water to the Digora Irrigation Canal.
