a city in northwestern China, at the northern foot of the Tien-Shan; situated on the Urumchi River. Administrative and principal industrial center of the Sinkiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Population, more than 800,000 (1975). Urumchi is a highway junction and terminal point on the Lan-Shin Railroad. The city and its environs are a center for coal mining (the Liutaowan fields), refining (from the Karamai-Wurhei and Tu-Shan-Tzu-Wu-Su fields), ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, machine building and the chemical industry. The city also has a cement plant, a glassworks, and enterprises of the paper, food-processing, and textile industries. The total capacity of its power plants is approximately 100,000 kW. Urumchi has a university.
