Shebeke

Shebeke

(1) Openwork designs or designs imitating them in the applied art of Azerbaijan.

(2) Window frames and gratings assembled from standard wooden components held together only by dowels and frequently ornamented with pieces of varicolored glass. Shebeke were in wide use in 18th-and 19th-century Azerbaijani architecture. Openwork lattices are also common in Arab countries, where they are called musharabiia, and in Middle Asia, where they are known as pandzhara.
