solid tantalum capacitor[′säl·əd ¦tant·əl·əm kə′pas·əd·ər] (electricity) An electrolytic capacitor in which the anode is a porous pellet of tantalum; the dielectric is an extremely thin layer of tantalum pentoxide formed by anodization of the exterior and interior surfaces of the pellet; the cathode is a layer of semiconducting manganese dioxide that fills the pores of the anode over the dielectric.
