Saltonstall, Leverett

(1892–1979) governor, U.S. senator; born in Chestnut Hill, Mass. A member of the Massachusetts legislature (Rep.; 1923–36) and Speaker from 1929, he was elected governor (1939–45). He served in the U.S. Senate (1945–67) and was Republican whip (1949–57). He also served as chairman of the armed services committee.
