Protvino

an urban-type settlement in Serpukhov Raion, Moscow Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on the Protva River, a tributary of the Oka, 17 km from Serpukhov. Population, 13,000 (1970). Protvino has a scientific complex of the Institute of High-energy Physics and a 76-gigaelectron-volt proton accelerator.
