Daxner, Štefan Marko

 

Born Dec. 22, 1823, in Tisovec; died there Apr. II, 1892. Slovak social figure and author.

Daxner was one of the leaders of the Slovak national movement in 1848–49. In the 1860’s he was a prominent leader of the Slovak petit-bourgeois People’s Party. He compiled the Memorandum of the Slovak People in 1861, whose main demand was autonomy for the Slovaks within the framework of the Hungarian kingdom. He collaborated in the publication of Matice Slovenská and Peŝtbudinske vedomosti.
