Stefanos Orbelian

Stefanos Orbelian

(also Stepanos Orbelian). Year of birth unknown; died 1304. Armenian historian and church and political figure.

Descended from the ruling family of the region of Siunik Orbelianov, Stefanos Orbelian was a bishop of Siunik. He wrote a number of works, including a history of Siunik, which he completed circa 1297–1300. His sources for the ancient and early medieval sections were the works of Movses Khorenatsi, Agathangelus, and other Armenian historians, as well as a number of works that have since been lost. He based his sections of contemporary history on documents of the time and personal knowledge. The most detailed and thorough part of his history deals with the 12th and 13th centuries, in particular the Mongol conquests and the rule of the Hulaguids in Armenia.
