On northeastern corner of MS; organized Feb 9, 1836 from Chickasaw cession, divided in 1870 into Alcorn, Prentiss, and Tishomingo counties. Name Origin: For Tishomingo (1733?-1837?), last full-blooded war chief of the Chickasaw Indians. Name means 'assistant chief': at this time he was the principal leader next to Ishtehotopa, the Chickasaw king
