Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Project

Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Project

An NHS programme established in 2001/2, as a collaboration of the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (PASA), NHS Logistics, NHS trusts’ pharmacists and pharmaceutical wholesalers to improve pharmaceutical supply chain performance. It was established against a background of perceived increasing NHS trust dissatisfaction with the service provided by the main wholesalers—associated with geographical variation—with the objective of improving performance throughout the pharmaceutical supply chain in the UK, and with particular focus on the trust-wholesaler interface. High-level “best practice” recommendations, supported by a menu of key performance indicators, were endorsed by the National Pharmaceutical Supplies Group (NPSG) in 2004, subject to trialing in the field.
