Tauke

Tauke

a Kazakh khan from 1680 to 1718.

In consolidating the khans’ power, Tauke relied on the beys, attempting to weaken the feudal leadership, the sultans. The Zhety-Zhargy common law code, which was compiled during Tauke’s rule, is known in Russian history as the “laws of Tauke.” It confirmed the blood feud and the social inequality of women and gave legal justification for the intensification of feudal oppression. In 1716, Tauke turned to Russia for military aid against the Oirats, or Dzungars.
