Samandar

Samandar

(also Semender), a Khazar city in the Northern Caucasus, the capital of the Khazar Kaganate until about A.D. 723. The exact location of Samandar has not been established; apparently it was located in the northern part of Dagestan or in the adjacent areas of Chechen-Ingushia. The city was an important stop on the trade route from Transcaucasia to Eastern Europe and was famous for its gardens. It was destroyed in the 960’s as the result of an invasion by the Rusy.
