Samarinda

 

a city and port in Indonesia, on the east coast of the island of Kalimantan. Population, 137,000 (1971). Sama-rinda is located at the mouth of the Mahakam River, 50 km from the sea; it is accessible to oceangoing vessels. The city’s industry includes manufacture of iron packaging materials for petroleum products; there is also woodworking. Crude oil extracted in the region is transported by pipeline to Balikpapan.
