A spurious ↑ in RBCs with a normal red cell mass, and a ↓ in blood volume; RP may occur in a background of mental stress, alcohol abuse, use of diuretics, or in acute nephritis; erythropoietin–EP levels are normal–± 7 U/L in contrast to P vera, in which EP is ↓–± 2 U/L or 2º polycythemia, in which the EP is ↑–± 120 U/L.
