Sambar(Cervus unicolor), an artiodactyl of the family Cervidae. The body length is 180–210 cm and the tail length, 30 cm. The animal stands 125–135 cm high at the shoulder and weighs as much as 300 kg. The antlers, which measure up to 130 cm long with only a few points (up to six) and are characteristic of only the stags, are shed every year in March or April. The sambar deer are dark brown with lighter under-sides. They are found in Asia: in southern China, in India, on the Indochina and Malacca peninsulas, and on the islands of Kalimantan, Hainan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. They live mainly in mountain forests, up to an elevation of 3,000 m above sea level. The animals are nocturnal. They spend most of the year in herds of five-ten members, forming larger herds only during the breeding season. The females give b’rth to one young. The sambar deer are hunted, and their numbers are small. SAMBAR
