SambreSambre(säN`brə), river, 120 mi (193 km) long, rising in N France and flowing NE to the Meuse River at Namur, SE Belgium. Canalized along most of its length, the river traverses the Franco-Belgian coal basin and industrial district, now in decline. During World War I heavy fighting occurred along the river.Sambrea river in France and Belgium, a left tributary of the Meuse. The Sambre is 190 km long and drains an area of 2,660 sq km. It originates in the northwestern spurs of the Ardennes and for most of its course flows through a plain. Fed primarily by rain, the river has its maximum flow in winter and spring. It is navigable for almost its entire length; below the city of Charleroi, it is navigable for vessels with displacements up to 1,500 tons. The river is connected with the Seine River basin by the Oise-Sambre Canal. The Sambre empties into the Meuse at Namur. SambreSambre
