Somali PeninsulaSomali Peninsula(Horn of Africa), a peninsula in East Africa. Area, about 750,000 sq km. Much of the surface is a stepped plateau with average elevations of 500 m to 1,500 m and a maximum elevation of 2,406 m in the Mijirtein Mountains. The climate is subequatorial, becoming tropical in the north. The annual precipitation ranges from 100 mm to 600 mm. With the exception of the Juba and Webi Shebeli, the rivers are temporary streams. Deserts and acacia semideserts are found along the coast, and the inland plateau supports savannas and thorn woodlands. The maritime regions of the peninsula are occupied by the Somali Democratic Republic and the Republic of Djibouti (formerly French Somaliland), and the interior forms part of Ethiopia.
