A hot main-sequence star, usually of spectral type B, whose complex spectrum shows sharp deep absorption lines with wings of bright emission lines superimposed on the normal absorption spectrum. It is now known that they are Be stars, the differences in appearance between the two arising from the directions in which they are observed.
