bililight

bililight

, bili light (bil′ē-līt″) An ultraviolet-emitting light source that is used to care for infants with neonatal jaundice. It is a type of phototherapy that helps to convert bilirubin into a form that can be detoxified by the liver, i.e., conjugated so that it becomes water soluble and can be eliminated from the body in urine and feces.

CAUTION!

When a bililight is used for an infant, the eyes should be covered to prevent drying and irritation, and measures should be taken to deal with an increased risk of dehydration.
