Trutovskii, Konstantin Aleksandrovich

 

Born Jan. 28 (Feb. 9), 1826, in Kursk; died Mar. 17 (29), 1893, in the village of Iakovlevka, in what is now Kursk Oblast. Painter and engraver of the realist trend in Ukrainian and Russian art. Auditor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1845–49); academician (1860).

Trutovskii painted genre pictures permeated by love for the people, for example, Round Dance in Kursk Province (1860, Tret’iakov Gallery) and Christmas Carols in the Ukraine (1864; Russian Museum, Leningrad). A number of his works denounce social injustice, for example, Collecting Arrears in the Village (1886; Museum of Fine Arts of the Tatar ASSR, Kazan). Trutovskii executed many illustrations and contributed to satirical journals.
