UBC–Lavall Telescope

(lă-val ) A rotating liquid-mercury mirror, 2.7 meters in diameter, on a fixed vertical mount. Operated by the University of British Columbia and Lavall University and located in Vancouver, it saw first light in 1992. It comprises a 2-mm-thick layer of mercury spread out by rotation over a paraboloidal support dish. It views a 21-arcmin field at the local zenith (centered on 49°.1).
