so·mat·ic mes·o·derm

the mesoderm adjacent to the ectoderm in the early embryo, after formation of the intraembryonic celom; the limbs and body wall are derived, in part, from it.

somatic mesoderm

a MESODERM with its embryonic origin on either side of the NOTOCHORD. It develops into
  1. (a) a series of blocks of SOMITES from which are derived MYOTOMES,
  2. (b) mesenchyme which forms connective tissue and
  3. (c) the vertebral column.
