Ubiivovk, Elena Konstantinovna

Born Nov. 22, 1918, in Poltava; died there May 26, 1942. One of the leaders of the antifascist underground in Poltava during the Great Patriotic War (1941–45). Hero of the Soviet Union (May 8, 1965, posthumously). Member of the All-Union Lenin Communist Youth League from 1936.

The daughter of a physician, Ubiivovk enrolled as a student at the University of Kharkov in 1937. After the fascist German troops occupied Poltava in November 1941, she organized an underground Komsomol youth group. She established ties with a partisan detachment and carried out its assignments. In early May 1942, Ubiivovk was arrested by the Gestapo. After brutal tortures, she was shot along with other members of her group.

On Oct. 28, 1967, a monument to Ubiivovk and other members of her underground group was unveiled in Poltava (sculptors, D. G. Sova, K. S. Pospolitak, and L. G. Zhukovskaia; architect, V. A. Pasichnyi).
