Bakhrushin Family

Russian industrialists who were originally merchants from the city of Zaraisk (now in Moscow Oblast).

In the 18th century the Bakhrushins were involved in buying up livestock. Aleksei Fedorovich Bakhrushin founded a leather factory in Moscow in 1834. His sons and grandsons expanded the enterprise, introduced technological innovations, and became the leading leather suppliers. In 1864 the Bakhrushin family built a cloth factory in Moscow. The family became very rich from government orders during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 and especially during World War I (1914–18). The Bakhrushins held leading positions in several banks and industrial enterprises in Moscow and spent large sums on philanthropy (orphanages, hospitals, and so forth). One member of the family, Aleksei Aleksan-drovich Bakhrushin (1865–1929), founded the first Russian theater Museum in Moscow in 1894. The Soviet historian S. V. Bakhrushin belongs to the family.
