(vōlto͞or`nō), chief river of S Italy, 109 mi (175 km) long, rising in the Apennines of Molise and flowing SE, then SW through Campania, past Capua, to the Tyrrhenian Sea. On its banks Guiseppe Garibaldi defeated (1860) the troops of Francis II of the Two Sicilies.
