Sherman, Harold Morrow (b. 1898)

Harold Morrow Sherman was born on July 13, 1898, in Traverse City, Michigan. He was educated at Traverse City High School and at the University of Michigan. In 1920, he married Martha Frances Bain.

Sherman conducted experiments in clairvoyance, extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, precognition and various forms of mediumship. He was head of the ESP Research Associates Foundation in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1942, he wrote a book on long distance telepathy, Thoughts Through Space: A Remarkable Adventure in the Realm of the Mind. It was written in conjunction with Arctic explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins. Sherman said it was “reporting a day-to-day account of the impressions that had come to me, acting as receiver, of things that had happened to Wilkins and members of his crew while searching for lost Russian fliers near the North Pole.” The recorded impressions were mailed each night by prearrangement to Dr. Gardner Murphy, then head of the psychology department of Columbia University. The experiment was conducted over a period of five and a half months, three nights per week, and resulted in an accuracy of approximately seventy percent.

Sherman was a pioneer in Electronic Voice Phenomena. His book You Can Communicate With the Unseen World (1974) examined the use of an ordinary tape recorder to record messages from departed spirits.

His book You Can Communicate With the Unseen World (1974) contained a tribute to medium Anne Gehman and had chapters dealing with her work in Spiritualism.
