Somba
(also called Some or Tamberma; native name Betam-maribe or Tamari), a people living in Benin, West Africa, along the upper Pendjari and upper Ouémé rivers, on the Togo border. Together with the related Berba, Soruba (Besorube), Bilapila, and Natemba they number more than 330,000 (1970, estimate). The Somba language belongs to the Gur (Central Bantoid) group of languages. The Somba have preserved their traditional clan and tribal religious beliefs. The chief occupations are cattle raising and the cultivation of millet, rice, and sorghum.
