Prurigo a skin disease characterized by severe itching and the appearance of nodular eruptions, bloody crusts, and lesions from scratching, predominantly on the extensor surfaces of the extremities, abdomen, back, lumbar region, and buttocks. Sensitization of the body to food products and medications, as well as hereditary factors, play an important role in the development mechanism of prurigo. The skin of prurigo patients is dry, and the lymph nodes are enlarged; neurotic disorders and insomnia are observed. A distinction is made between infantile, adult, and nodular prurigo. Infantile prurigo is usually observed in infants that have a tendency toward an exudative diathesis. The disease is usually localized on the face and the scalp. Nodular prurigo is characterized by a small number of grayish-brown nodules ranging from the size of a pea to a hazelnut and by chronic relapses. Treatment consists in desensitizing, antihis-taminic, and tranquilizing agents; diet; external antipruritic preparations of magma or corticosteroid ointments; and sanatorium-health resort treatment. prurigoenUK
