Reinberg, Samuil Aronovich

Born Mar. 29 (Apr. 10), 1897, in Riga; died Mar. 28, 1966, in Moscow. Soviet roentgenologist. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1941). Professor (1930) and doctor of medical sciences (1947). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Reinberg graduated from the First Leningrad Medical Institute in 1921. In 1927 he organized the world’s first subdepart-ment of pediatric roentgenology at the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute. He headed the subdepartment of roentgenology at the Leningrad State Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians from 1930. Beginning in 1943, Reinberg was head of the subdepartment of roentgenology and radiology at the Central Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians, and simultaneously, from 1943 to 1951, he was director of the Central Scientific Research Institute of Roentgenology and Radiology in Moscow.

Reinberg’s principal works were on the problems of radio-diagnosis of diseases of the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, and musculoskeletal system and childhood diseases. He was the first in the USSR to perform an angiography on a living human being. He developed the principles of emergency roentgen diagnosis.

Reinberg was one of the founders and a member of the presidium of the All-Union Society of Roentgenologists and Radiologists and honorary chairman and honorary member of 17 scientific societies, including republic societies. He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1966 for his monograph Radio-diagnosis of Diseases of the Bones and Joints. He was awarded three orders and various medals.
