Samus’, Samoilo Ivanovich
Real name and year and place of birth and death unknown. Ukrainian military and political figure.
Samus’ was colonel of the Boguslav Regiment from 1685. He led the fight against the Turkish and Tatar raids on Podolia. He served as nakaznoi (appointed) hetman of the Right-bank Ukraine from 1692 to 1699. From 1702 to 1704 he was one of the leaders of the peasant and cossack uprising against the Polish landowners. Samus’ moved with his regiment into the Left-bank Ukraine in 1703. He participated in the struggle against the Swedish troops of Charles XII. Samus’ was one of the first to oppose the traitor Mazepa.
