Stepanavan
Stepanavan
(until 1924, Dzhalal-Ogly), a city (since 1938) under republic jurisdiction and administrative center of Stepanavan Raion, Armenian SSR. Named in honor of S. Shaumian. Situated on the right bank of the Dzoraget River of the Kura River basin, in the Lori Depression, 30 km west of the Tumanian railroad station on the Tbilisi-Yerevan line. Population, 14,500 (1975).
The Promsviaz’ plant, which produces communications equipment, is located in Stepanavan. The city also has a plant for the production of high-frequency equipment, a brewery, a creamery, and factories manufacturing hosiery, carpets, clothing, and furniture. Stepanavan also has a veterinary sovkhoz-technicum, a people’s amateur theater, and a house-museum in honor of S. Shaumian. The city is a tourist site.
