Lisitsian, Stepan Danilovich
Born Sept. 22 (Oct. 4), 1865, in Tbilisi; died Jan. 4, 1947, in Yerevan. Soviet geographer, ethnologist, historian, and philologist. Professor (1941); doctor of geographical sciences.
Lisitsian graduated from the University of Warsaw in 1889. In 1924 he began teaching at Yerevan State University. Lisitsian was the founder and first chairman of the Armenian Geographical Society. From 1928 to 1947 he directed the ethnography division of the State Historical Museum of Armenia (which now bears his name). His research was devoted to Armenia’s physical geography, history, material culture, and archaeology, as well as to philology and education. Lisitsian was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
