Mironov, Stepan Il’ich

Born July 29 (Aug. 10), 1883, in the village of Poroshino, Viatka Province (presentday Kirov Oblast); died Mar. 30, 1959, in Moscow. Soviet petroleum geologist; academician of the Academy of Sciences (from 1946).

Mironov graduated from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1914. From 1913 to 1929 he worked for the Geological Committee. He became director (1929–31), deputy director (1931–38), and consultant (1938–46) of the Petroleum Prospecting Institute in Leningrad. Subsequently he became department head (1946–47) and head of laboratory (1950–59) at the Petroleum Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow (later the Institute of Geology and Fossil Fuel Mining of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR).

Mironov conducted research in the Volga-Ural and Emba petroleum regions and on Sakhalin Island. His main works were devoted to methods of researching oil deposits of the USSR and the problems of the origin of oil. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a number of medals.
