Location:Southwestern California, east of Los Angeles. Accessible by US 60; CA 18 and 74. Nearby cities/towns include Palm Springs, Riverside, and San Bernardino.
Facilities:3 visitor centers, cabins, 23 campgrounds, 21 group camps, dispersed camping, 13 picnic areas, 5 equestrian campgrounds, 2 fishing piers, trails (598 miles), unpaved roads (1,178 miles), OHV areas, scenic drives, 3 shooting ranges, 5 downhill ski areas, snow play area.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, swimming, water-skiing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV riding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding.
Special Features:6 wilderness areas; top fishing lakes Big Bear and Lake Hemet; Rim of the World Scenic Byway; a 193-mile portion of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section); natural hot springs. Geological evidence of the San Andreas Fault can be seen around Lost Lake, the forest's only natural lake, which formed in a "sag" in the earth's surface.
