Established: 1968.
Location:On the Texas gulf coast, about 50 miles southwest of Galveston.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails, auto tour route, boat ramp.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, crabbing, hiking, waterfowl hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge bottomland forests and willow trees attract high numbers of warblers migrating north. When warm, moist air heading north from the Gulf collides with cold dry air heading south, conditions are good for a "warbler fallout." Heavy winds and rain cause the tiny birds to drop from the sky to the shelter of trees. Hundreds of birds fall into single locatins, too tired to fly any more.
Habitats: 27,414 acres of marshes, ponds, bottomland forest.
Access: Open during daylight hours.
Wild life: Snow geese, egrets terns, bald eagles, oysters, crabs, bobcats, and alligators.
