psammoma body

A term for a round, laminated, 20–100-µm diameter calcified mass seen by light microscopy, which corresponds to degenerated papillary clusters of cellular debris. It is a very common finding in benign prostate hypertrophy, and may occur in benign and malignant epithelial neoplasms—e.g., papillary carcinomas of the thyroid, ovary, endometrium, pancreas, and kidney—meningiomas, benign ‘sugar tumour’ of lung, mesothelioma, mesothelial cell hyperplasia, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma; ovarian serous cystadenoma, and dystrophic calcification of matrix vesicles and desmoid tumours
