Stepanov, Georgii Vladimirovich

Born Apr. 9,1919, in the city of Biisk. Soviet romance philologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1956.

Stepanov graduated in 1947 from the faculty of philology at Leningrad State University, where he was a student of V. F. Shishmarev and B. A. Krzhevskii. He taught at the university from 1948 to 1971, becoming a professor there in 1969. In 1971 he became head of the department of romance languages at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Stepanov’s chief works deal with the history of the Spanish language, modern Spanish grammar and stylistics, and the Spanish language in Latin America. Other works by Stepanov are devoted to Spanish literature (Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón, R. M. del Valle-Inclán, M. Unamuno, and A. M. Matute) and to linguistic typology in romance countries.
