Vivien de Saint-Martin, Louis

 

Born May 22, 1802, in Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay, Calvados Department; died Jan. 3, 1897, in Paris. French geographer.

Vivien de Saint-Martin wrote A History of Geography and Geographical Discoveries (1873). The work contains an atlas and summarizes factual information on the history of geographical discoveries and expeditions since ancient times. He also wrote works on the history of the geography of North America and Asia Minor, a three-volume work on the geography of India in the works of ancient geographers, and an atlas of historical and modern geography of the world. From 1863 to 1876, Vivien de Saint-Martin published the Geographic Yearbook, which contained a summary of expeditions and geographical literature in a given year.
