shift system shift system a method of organizing work that enables a production unit (a plant) to be run on a more intensive basis. For many plants the ‘standard’ working day of the labour force is eight hours, but by using a double- or three-shift system the plant can be worked for up to 24 hours. This enables a firm to make maximum use of its FIXED FACTOR INPUT and lower its unit costs of production accordingly See RETURNS TO THE VARIABLE-FACTOR INPUT. |
