Shiga Prefecture is part of Kansai (Kinki), a major economic region. Lake Biwa yields fish.

Textiles account for 18 percent of the value of Shiga Prefecture’s industrial production, electrical machines for 16 percent, and other machines for 11 percent. The prefecture also manufactures glass and ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and wood products. The Lake Biwa area is noted for tourism.
